Job Summary: The Therapy Manager is responsible to assist the Director of Therapy for the ongoing assessment and improvement of Rehabilitative Services. Such responsibilities encompass not only the internal functioning of the department, but also the integration of the department into the overall functioning of the organization. The Therapy Manager in collaboration with the Director of Therapy will ensure optimal department operation (i.e. staffing, patient scheduling, program development, staff development, accurate/timely FIM assessment, therapy attendance for team conference, daily patient intensity, etc.). The Therapy Manager will also assume responsibility and accountability for a designated group of patients and provides therapy evaluations, modalities and treatments in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, maintaining the highest degree of quality patient care. The Therapy Manager also assumes responsibility and accountability for the care of those patients being treated by Therapy Assistants (PTA or COTA) according to Therapy Manager licensure and will be assigned to orient staff and students and to assume the duties and responsibilities of the Director of Therapy in the absence of that individual. The Therapy Manager accurately assesses patients' needs, identifies and initiates appropriate therapy interventions, provides patient and family teaching, and works cooperatively with other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for professional therapy practice and interdisciplinary teamwork. These functions are carried out according to hospital policy in accordance with the mission and vision of the hospital and consistent with the philosophy of the department. The Therapy Manager participates in performance improvement and program development activities. Responsibilities include providing input into the budgetary planning process; contributing to cost effectiveness of services and programs provided by the department; communicating the employee's observations and suggestions related to opportunities for improvement and maintaining positive relations with all customers. Reporting Relationships: The Therapy Manager functions under the general supervision of the Director of Therapy Services or designee. Provision of Care/Services: - Provides patient care services to patients of over the age of 16, including:
- Performs patient assessment.
- Establishes plan of care.
- Assesses the effectiveness of treatment and modifies treatment to achieve goals.
- Provides care in accordance with physician's orders and established plan of care.
- Assesses educational needs of the patient, family, caregiver or significant other and provides education to meet those needs.
- Plans for discharge.
- Communicates with patient, family, caregivers, significant other and members of the healthcare team to achieve rehabilitation goals and promote maximum benefit of care.
Leadership: Utilizes the appropriate leadership skills in directing, delegating and evaluation management. Practice and applies management knowledge principles in order to comply with regulatory Agencies, Federal, State and hospital standards. - Coordinates and integrates inter-departmental and intra-departmental services.
- Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services.
- Continuously assesses and improves the quality of (care and/or services) provided.
- Demonstrates communication ability and creates mechanisms to facilitate effective communication within the department and the organization.
- Demonstrates delegation and leadership ability by providing problem solving, decision making.
- Meet with staff members at least twice per year to discuss their performance competence and goal attainment.
- Review therapist's professional objectives.
- Determine annual competence of staff for their specific job function.
- Provide new staff orientation to job responsibilities. Determine end to probationary period.
Resource Management: Human Resources: - Facilitates the maximum utilization of personnel.
Assumes department responsibility for developing, implementing and evaluating a program of staff, development for profession and non-profession staff that comprehensively includes competency assessment, orientation, in-services and continuing education. - Assist the Director of Therapy in selecting and hiring qualified personnel; validates licensure as appropriate, assures the orientation of the new employee; and evaluates personnel performance to include rewards, promotions, transfers, demotions, suspensions and terminations.
- Performs other duties as assigned to support the overall effectiveness of the department.
Professional Requirements: - Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
- Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and Joint Commission regulations.
- Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
- Wears identification while on duty.
- Attends departmental in-services and completes annual competencies/education requirements.
- Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Complies with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety, infection control and emergency management.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
Experience/Skills: - Graduate of an accredited therapy program. PT, OT, SLP with current Ohio licensure.
- At least three years patient care experience as licensed therapist
- Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, evaluate and direct activities of clinical personnel
- Functional Independence Measure (FIM) certification within 10 days of hire
- Current Basic Life Support / CPR card.
Physical and Safety Requirements: - Good general health and stress coping ability. Full mobility and ability to participate in vigorous activity. Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with all constituents (patients, families, peers, and other healthcare team members) as needed for assessment, intervention, and professional development. Possess near vision acuity for accurate reading of equipment and recording on patient charts. Must be physically able to lift, support and move patients.
- Provides an environment conducive to safety for patients, visitors and staff. Assesses the risks for safety and implements appropriate precautions. Complies with appropriate and approved safety standards.
Machines, tools, equipment and work aids used: Therapeutic exercise and modality devices including but not limited to: electronic equipment, exercise equipment, hydrotherapy equipment, electrical lifts, ambulation devices, wheelchairs, stretchers, medical monitoring devices, computer, phone, and dictation equipment.
