The Oklahoma City Veterans Affairs Health Care System is seeking a full time staff Psychiatrist for consultation and Liaison (C&L), as well as, cross coverage for a 25-bed general psychiatric acute care ward for the Psychiatry service, which is affiliated with the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
A psychosomatic fellowship and extensive experience in consultation/liaison is needed for this Psychiatry multifunctional clinical position with an emphasis on Consultation and Liaison (C&L) Services/Psychiatry services. The C&L is expected to provide robust educational experience for medical students and for psychiatry residents while working as a team with the medical psychologist assigned to the C&L service. It is also expected to be strong teaching environment for medical students and residents. This position will specifically manage assessment and initial treatment of acute mental health patients within the Emergency Department and providing appropriate disposition including admission.
The Psychiatrist should possess strong clinical skills to provide treatment for a range of mental health disorders relevant to Veterans and will provide a wide range of care including - high risk assessment and referral; intake/diagnostic and assessments; comprehensive treatment planning using patient centered and recovery-based models; evidence-based individual, group, and family therapy services to Veterans and their families; and case/care management services.
The staff psychiatrist will also provide cross coverage of the 25-bed general psychiatric acute care ward. Inpatient duties will include:
* Examines and evaluates each inpatient assigned on the day of admission or on the first working day thereafter.
* Ensures appropriate psychiatric history, physical exam, required lab data or other studies have been ordered and completed.
* Clearly establishes the legal status of the patient's admission (voluntary or involuntary). Orders and prescribes all necessary medical care, treatment and activity therapies.
* Maintains primary care responsibility for the physical condition of patients and obtains necessary consultations and referrals for non-psychiatric medical treatments. Reviews all reports, laboratory procedures, and consultations and assures appropriate action is taken.
The incumbent will rotate with other physicians on a monthly roster for weekend/holiday coverage, and week night backup for residents; and through affiliated institutions, may participate in education and training of psychiatry residents, medical students, psychology interns, and allied health trainees. As time permits, may participate in research projects. May be assigned to various programs within Psychiatry Service depending on fluctuating staffing patterns and workloads.

Work Schedule:Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM,rotating nights and weekends may be required.
Citizenship: Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
