Baltimore, Maryland - Witt Kieffer is proud to partner with the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) in the search for a dynamic, nationally recognized physician leader to serve as Chair, Department of Surgery and Surgeon in Chief of the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) and Medical System (UMMS). This is a unique role to inspire, develop and lead an accomplished faculty at one of the top ten public medical schools in the country.
The Department of Surgery is comprised of eight specialty divisions and is known for its innovative research and entrepreneurial spirit. The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research ranks the department in the top 25 with over $5 million in NIH funding. With over 110 full-time clinical and scientific faculty members, the Department is poised for significant growth and the potential for a multitude of collaborative clinical and research related opportunities across the school, the campus, the 14-hospital University of Maryland Medical System, and the Veterans Administration Maryland Health System. In collaboration with the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the NCI Designated Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Department has established active research and integrated clinical programs across surgical disciplines with international and national reputations for excellence.
Now in its third century, UMSOM was chartered in 1807 as the first public medical school in the United States. It continues today as one of the fastest growing, top-tier biomedical research enterprises in the world -- with 43 academic departments, centers, institutes, and programs; and a faculty of more than 3,000 physicians, scientists, and allied health professionals, including members of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences. With an operating budget of more than $1.2 billion, the School of Medicine works closely in partnership with UMMC and UMMS to provide research-intensive, academic and clinically-based care for more than 1.2 million patients each year.
The successful candidate should have excellent communication skills, collaborative leadership abilities and possess the highest ethical standards; including a strong record of achievement in inclusion and diversity. We are seeking a Chair with experience as an exceptional academic physician leader, who has led significant clinical and research programs, has an outstanding record of scholarly activity, and a history mentoring students, residents, fellows and faculty towards successful academic careers. Qualified candidates will have at least five years of major managerial experience including budgetary and administrative responsibilities. Applicants must hold an MD or equivalent medical degree (MD/PhD would be a plus), be board certified in a surgical specialty, eligible for medical licensure in the state of Maryland, and meet the University of Maryland criteria for appointment to a tenured senior level faculty position.
Confidential inquiries, nominations, expressions of interest and candidate materials (including a letter of interest and CV) should be submitted via email to the University of Maryland's search consultant team. Please contact Kimberly Smith via UMSOMChairSurgery@wittkieffer.com.
