Serves as reporter for newspaper, generating story ideas, carrying out research, conducting interviews, writing stories, editing and fact-checking. Work on stories relevant to Association and public health. Is primary reporter for Healthy You, member groups and Affiliate news and contributor to APHA news coverage, among other general writing duties. Serve as the newspaper’s liaison to all of APHA’s member groups and Affiliates, soliciting stories, keeping up with their activities, speaking at meetings and encouraging their participation. Conduct science-based research. Review materials from scientific journals, reports and websites and other sources. Use to write stories that are well-researched, factual and based on science. Serve as a reporter at the APHA Annual Meeting, covering sessions and events and taking photographs. Contribute to blog and social media. Create and edit content for The Nation’s Health website, including original stories, Resources and Newsmakers. Serves as liaison with website production company. Organizes and supplies data to web vendor. Reviews and approves website content for publication and makes sure content is published on time. Keep abreast of schedules and deadlines. Fact-check editorial content in stories and other projects. Oversee correction process for newspaper, logging corrections and ensuring that they are made in the print publication and online. Supply correction information to web vendor. Assist with monthly copyediting and proofing. Work on podcasts for The Nation’s Health. Work on social media for newspaper and Association. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism. At least three years experience reporting and interviewing in newspaper, magazine or other news environment. Familiarity with newspaper industry a plus. Strong knowledge of AP Style and journalism ethics and principles necessary. First-rate writing, editing, proofreading and specialized computer skills, including basic knowledge of web uploading, layout and graphics programs such as Photoshop. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Strong ability to work independently and as team member. Must be able to work quickly under pressure, multi-task and meet deadlines.
Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations.
Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Mon- Fri. (daytime). Number of openings: 1.
